“Green” Fashion”
Of course, I wasn’t fortunate enough to view the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion show in person, but I certainly followed it on TV, in the magazines, on the net etc. Like I guess, every one my age would have!
What I really liked about this fashion fiesta was that the top designers are raising a social issue and drawing the attention of the public to relevant issues. Going green in their approach they sent across the message through their collections.
Nitin Bal Chauhan used handwoven wool from shepherds in Himachal Pradesh, Samant Chauhan used natural silks and recycled junk jewellery from Chandni Chowk while Ruchira Kandhari, Deepika Govind and Ekta Jaipuria combined organic knits with vanya silks sourced from the north-east.
Deepika Govind used hand woven fabric and silks, cottons and linens which were safe. The dyes used don't have components, hazardous to the environment and all this has been certified by international bodies.
Vikram Phadnis aptly called his collection “ Save the earth” and drew attention through earthy hues.
Around nine designers used fabrics free of heavy metal and had tied up with Birla Cellulose, the company making “safe” fabric. Isn’t that great for social consciousness? Since these designers are icons in more ways than one, hopefully they will awaken the conscience of their fans….
