Proud to be in the IT industry.
With the growing demand of human resource in the field of IT, the industry is also absorbing graduates from various science streams. I consider myself fortunate for having graduated at the right time when the industry is in need of workforce. It’s a great opportunity for people like me who want to make their careers in this field but were earlier held back because they were not engineers.
I was recruited by the process of campus selections and now I am undergoing
training. After having undergone the training of three months, I won’t call myself a part of the IT industry because I haven’t yet proven myself here. But, it feels good being here because we are getting exposed to the world of technology where we are not only enjoying technology but most importantly creating it. We get a chance to meet people from different backgrounds and regions and hence it’s a great learning experience with a mix and match of cultures. With assignments and group work activities, our work poses us with challenges each day, expecting us to be on our toes every moment. And no doubt, the money our job offers us gives us the added sense of independence and responsibility.
But, in a huge industry like this, many a times we feel ‘Lost’. Here, it’s all about learning on our own. You need to develop the skill of helping and being helped by your fellow group members. The field requires dedication, intelligence
and primarily quickness. Because, it’s a rats race after all. To stand up in the crowd being a rat won’t work. You need to be a bandicoot!
To mention about the work culture, well I have never experienced any discrimination on the grounds of gender or on the basis of the region to which we belong. An individual is respected for the work done, both by the colleagues and by the organisation. And here is a special note- the IT industry does not mean serious coding always.
At home, for many parents it’s a sense of pride seeing their daughter’s being a part of this booming industry. They feel that the tag of an IT professional will help them fetch a good groom for their daughters! The outside world also recognises you as a techie who earns fat money. Sometimes this sounds cool too. On the whole, being an IT professional is both challenging and stressful, be it male or female. And in the long run, definitely more challenging and stressful for a woman with added responsibilities of family. But what’s the fun if you don’t have the element of challenge in your work? And this is how we need to keep ourselves motivated..
