Insurance for the Unborn

Women in New South Wales will be able to insure their unborn babies against death and birth defects. The insurance will be applicable to women between the ages of 16 and 40 only. Women who deliver babies with Down’s syndrome, Spina bifida or a cleft palate can claim $50,000 from the insurance company. Women with a stillborn baby would get $10,000 while those women who underwent a lot of complications during pregnancy or labour would also get a stipulated amount from the insurance company.

Pregnancy Risks

The age of new mothers has gone up from 27 in 1985 to 31 today and this presents quite a few complications and risks in the delivery. The risk of a stillborn child in women over 35 is one for every 440. Whereas, in younger women, the risk is one to a thousand! There are many who are upset with the new insurance scheme because they feel that the policy is playing on the fears of pregnant women to make business! What is your say in the matter?
